Ever wondered if your favourite musical theatre song has ever escaped the stage and found its way into the UK Top 100 Singles Chart?

I’ve put together a list of the musical theatre songs that have made their mark on the UK singles chart. This is not a list of jukebox musicals, so you won’t find songs by ABBA, Queen or The Temptations simply because they were later incorporated into a musical. Instead, we’re looking at songs with a genuine connection to a musical, and tracking just how successful they were as singles.

Chart One: Musical Theatre Songs That Originated in a Musical

The first chart takes the most traditional definition of a musical theatre song: the song originated in a stage musical. This includes songs written specifically for a musical and subsequently recorded by the original cast, a pop artist, or another performer. It also includes songs from film adaptations of stage musicals, provided that the stage musical came first. Changes to the lyrics, arrangement, production or performer do not prevent a song from qualifying; the important thing is that its musical theatre origins can be traced back to the stage.

The key distinction is simply which came first: if the song originated in a film or another non-stage medium and the stage musical came later, it belongs in this second chart.
